Nigel Mansell’s unforgettable 1992 British GP win

Mansell claimed his one and only championship title at his beloved home circuit of Silverstone at a memorable 1992 British Grand Prix.

Driving the iconic FW14B, Mansall secured pole position for his home race, setting a lap time of 1:18.965 putting him 1.919s ahead of his teammate Riccardo Patresse. Mansall commenting at the time, “I was in two minds, whether to go out and even beat my time at 19.1 or 19.2”
“To get in the 18s for me, I’ll say it for myself, it was sensational”
Mansall lined up on pole, with his Italian teammate behind him on the front row in P2. Behind the Williams in P3, Ayrton Senna lined up ahead of the 5 lights. Patresse immediately surpassed Mansell going into copse corner, however, Mansell was quick to recover from this set back by reclaiming the lead one corner later before pulling away from the rest of the pack.
As they crossed the finish line Mansell took victory in front of home fans, winning his fourth home race and seventh of the season. as he took his 28th career win, Mansell became the most successful British driver of all time, the record previously held by Jackie Stewart with 27 career wins.
Mansell was followed by his Italian collegue who finished in P2 in the other Williams. Martin Brundle completed the podium driving a Benetton-Ford.
With one hand off the wheel, Mansell fist pumped the air. Meanwhile fans were unable to hold back their overwhelming joy as they flooded the circuit, swarming Mansell’s car on his in-lap. Mansell unable to pass the mobs abandoned his car halfway on the circuit, getting a lift from a transit vehicle to the podium.

In a post-race interview Mansell described his emotions telling interviewers “I’ve never experienced that in my whole career anywhere in the world”.
Mansell immediately praising fans; “I mean they’re fantastic, aren’t they? It’s just incredible. If I’m going to dedicate the most historic race of Great Britain in Formula One, I dedicate it to the fans out there, they are just unbelievable.”
The love and pride from the British fans has not wavered over the years, with thousands of fans flocking to Goodwood Festival of Speed to catch a glimpse of Mansell behind the wheel of his FW14B once again in 2019.
