Sunday debrief: disappointment for the home hero as his teammate makes history... again

Max Verstappen wins in Mexico, Hamilton finishing behind the Bull, with Leclerc completing the podium. A thrilling race with many overtakes and a disappointing start for the home hero Sergio Perez, whose race ended at turn 1 of lap 1. The real star of the Mexican GP being Lando Norris who made his way up to P5 with 5 laps to go after starting in P17.

The current world champion, Verstappen starting in P3, the two Ferrari’s locking out the front row. Meanwhile, at the back of the grid Stroll started in P20 from the pit lane, with Sargeant in P19 and Tsunoda in P17 after both drivers took a penalty.

A great start for Verstappen as he slides his way between the two Ferrari’s taking the lead into turn 1, Perez seeing a gap on the outside to take the lead. Luck wasn’t on Perez’s side as he makes contact with Leclerc and picking up significant damage as his car flies into the air, Perez returned to the pit at the end of the lap, putting an end to his race. Leclerc, the other car in the incident, with nowhere to go being sandwiched between the two Red Bulls, picked up front wing damage. Leclerc bringing out the VSC on lap 5 after his front-end plate falls of the car and on to the track.

After many laps behind the Alphatauri, Hamilton made his way past Ricciardo on Lap 11, before catching up with Sainz in P3 on lap 25. Hamilton pitting on Lap 25, coming out in P7.
Leclerc currently leading the race, came into the pits on lap 32, giving the lead back to Verstappen. Leclerc re-joining the track in P2, closing the gap between himself and the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton behind him down to just over 3 seconds.
The safety car was brought out on lap 33 for Magnussen, after his Haas made a big impact with the barriers, before fire came of the back of his Haas. Magnussen now the second driver out of this race. The yellow flag shortly changing to a red on lap 34, all drivers returning the pits, Ferrari quick to check Leclerc’s car. Alonso silently retiring 3 laps later for the second time in the last races.

It was a standing start after the red flag, Verstappen doing well to keep P1 as Hamilton battels with Leclerc for P2. Hamilton eventually getting his way and taking the place on lap 40, Hamilton putting a good fight as he goes on to the grass picking up dust in his pursuit. Tsunoda and Piastri made contact on lap 49, Tsunoda spinning of track, both drivers continuing in the race with Tsunoda dropping down to P16.
