Sunday Debrief: Verstappen claims win 7 of 2024 in Spain

Max Verstappen adds another win to the tally, with a third consecutive win in Barcelona at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

 

Qualifying

To top of qualifying, Norris continues his impressive run this season with a pole finish in qualifying. Lining up next to the brit for Sunday’s race, the 3-time world champion Max Verstappen’s. Both Mercedes with a new floor this weekend, lined up on the second row, Hamilton the faster of the pair in P3.

 

Alpine slowly recovering this season, as both cars qualified in the top 10 for Sunday’s race. Gasly lining up in P7, behind Ocon in P6. Williams on the other hand had a dreadful qualifying, both cars failing to make it out of Q1. Perez, who qualified in P8, will drop down to P11 for Sunday after a penalty carried over from Canada.

 

Race

Going into Turn 1, Norris tried to fend off Verstappen, both drivers in the process losing position to Russell who stormed past the feuding pair while going round the outside at turn 1. Verstappen quick to regain position, taking the lead from the Mercedes on lap 3.

The two Haas drivers suffered another blow this weekend, with both drivers picking up a penalty in the race. Magnussen was first to receive a 5-second penalty for a false start, Hulkenberg picking up a penalty in the later stages of the race for speeding in the pit lane.

 

Lando Norris, who started the race from pole, dropped down the pack after going off-strategy, but recovered to take on Verstappen towards the end of the race. Time was not in favour of Lando Norris who fell short of a second victory in Formula One.

 

Lewis Hamilton on a soft-medium-soft strategy, passed his teammate in Lap 52 of 66 to take the final podium position. Hamilton holding on to the position to secure a first podium for the season, his first podium in 13 races since Mexico City towards the end of last season.

 

As the came round the final corner to take the chequered flag, it was Verstappen to take victory for win number 7 of 2024, Norris to his disappointment crossed the line second, with Hamilton trailing behind in third for his best finish of the season.
